Biography
Guy Smeets’ path towards becoming a musician began when, at the age of six, he saw Robbie Williams perform live at the Arena. The experience left a lasting
impression and planted the seed for his own musical future.
His fascination with music had started even earlier: from the age of three, he was rarely without a guitar in his hands. At nine, he took his first steps on stage and began sitting in at jazz and blues jam sessions, where he learned from seasoned musicians. These early experiences played an important role in shaping his musical development.
Together with several of these experienced musicians, Guy formed his own band at a young age. They built a strong reputation in the blues scene, released an album and
played at numerous clubs, venues and festivals throughout the Netherlands and the rest of Europe. At seventeen, Guy decided to leave the band to broaden his musical horizons and continue developing as a musician. Shortly before turning eighteen, he completed his music studies. Those formative years laid an important foundation for his musical identity and continue to inform his approach to music.
Today, Guy works as a live and studio guitarist across a wide range of artists, genres and musical settings. His work spans established performers and international acts,
as well as artists from the Netherlands and musicians at the very start of their careers. Comfortable in a variety of musical environments, he contributes across different areas of a project and performs and occasionally tours with artists in the Netherlands, throughout Europe and, at times, further afield.
Blues remains an important part of Guy’s musical roots and continues to influence his playing and approach to music. Rather than defining his style, it informs the soul and vitality he aims to bring to his playing. Whether he is performing in a raw, stripped-back setting, contributing to a large-scale live show or working on a carefully crafted studio recording, his focus is on bringing the music to life and making all the elements come together as a cohesive whole.
His contribution goes beyond playing guitar parts. Guy actively helps shape the overall musical picture, creates arrangements for live shows and takes on a leadership role within bands and projects when needed. With an eye for detail and a strong feel for the artist’s character and the needs of the music, he looks for ways to make a song, performance or production stronger. From time to time, he also co-writes songs with artists, contributing his musical ideas and perspective where they add value.
Although Guy works across several areas of the music industry, his greatest passion is playing live. This is where the music, the band’s energy, the interaction with the
audience and the construction of a show come together. He particularly enjoys building a live show in collaboration with the artist and band, and seeing how the music and audience interaction strengthen one another.
At the heart of Guy’s approach is a commitment to serving the music and the artist. His aim is not to put himself in the spotlight, but to contribute to the bigger picture
through his playing, ideas and involvement. Whether in an intimate setting, a large-scale live show or a carefully produced studio recording, he looks for the right balance between the different musical elements. He always aims to bring a sense of soul and vitality to his playing. For him, it is when everything comes together and the music truly comes alive that it all falls into place
